In today’s ultra competitive, tryouts at 7 years old, win at all cost, A-team/B or C-team, youth sports environment…is it any wonder kids are dropping out of organized youth sports at all time high levels, this before they enter jr. high!
I’ve been speaking to children lately who have succumbed to the stress and pressure of performing to the expectations of others (peers & adults), and are losing their self-confidence because they feel they’ve fallen short of those often times unrealistic expectations. I came across a quote from one of my favorite Olympic athletes – Jackie Joyner Kersee, who sums it up perfectly for me. I hope you share with your kids. She said in an interview:
“The medals don’t mean anything, and the glory doesn’t last. It’s all about your Happiness. The rewards are going to come, but my Happiness is just loving the sport and having Fun performing.”
