My favorite quote on being a role model comes from former University of Texas National Championship Head Coach Mack Brown. When asked about being a role model and what he teaches his football players about being leaders and noble young men he says “Don’t ever walk by a child without stopping and shaking his hand or signing an autograph because that is what we are supposed to do. That’s the role model we are supposed to be.”
So simple, yet so powerful. It’s one thing I wish more athletes (and coaches) would understand and take time to do. But here’s the thing…you don’t need to be a pro player to shake hands or give a High-5 to a child seeking acknowledgement or praise. Just do it, and you will instantly be someone they admire and look up to!
